Bottoms
Hey everyone and welcome, today we will be talking about the movie bottoms. Fun Fact, director and co writer Emma Seligman, co-Writer and star Rachel Sennott, and star Ayo Edebiri all met at NyU. This film came out in 2023 and stars Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, and Ruby Cruz, and was directed by Emma Seligman. So without further ado let’s get right into it.
Bottoms tells the story of two unpopular lesbians who starts a fight club to get closer to their crushes.
Bottoms is a coming of age comedy. It similar vibes to Booksmart, blockers, or not another teen movie.
Bottoms is filled with some faces you may have seen before or maybe you haven’t. Rachel Sennott was in Bodies Bodies Bodies, Ayo Edebiri is in The Bear, Ruby Cruz is in Mare of Easton, Havana Rose Lie was in No Exit, Kaia Gerber was in American Horror Story, Nicholas Galitzine was in Red, White, and Royal Blue, Marshawn Lynch was in Westward, Punkie Johnson was on SNL, and Emma Seligman also directed Shiva Baby.
Bottoms is one of those movies I was unsure if I was going to watch, but I decided to give it a try and absolutely loved it. I went to a theatre that wasn’t really packed but all of us that were in there were laughing all the way through and for me its a movie ill definitely want to revisit because it left a good impression.
The comedy in bottoms was spot on from the line delivery to the facial expressions. Marshawn Lynch was great as the history teacher/ advisor who many thought was dumb and throughout the film we question that, Nicholas Galitzine was funny as the typical jock who does what he wants, overracts, and makes everyones life more difficult, ruby cruz’s character just wanted to blow up stuff which was not something I was expecting as an option to solve their problems but i support it, and punkie Johnson had me cackling as gay Yoda who really didn’t offer any advice while also giving ayos character plane bread and chocolate milk as a snack. These are just some of the standouts but each individual person in the fight club all had their time to make us laugh and it was great that with all these characters it worked out.
Rachel and Ayo were funny as these outcast but seeing how the school viewed them as these basically invisible people was funny. They make it clear that they’re not hated/ignored because they’re lesbian but more because they’re just unpopular and people think theyre ugly. the chemistry between these two was great and they did a great job of bouncing jokes off at each other and further proved that these two are great actresses.
This movie throws in these stereotypes about high school and mixes them with some real life experience people deal with in high school and it meshes so well. If you ever went to a high school where sports especially football was their pride and glory then you’ll probably enjoy the scenes where they satirize that more than the normal viewer and laugh at how ridicuoulus It all is yet how true some of it seemed like when you were in high school. Going to a school that is centered around football is definitely an experience and it truly does feel like they don’t care about anything else. Obviously there are more things they joke about but it’s funny to watch this movie and then think about how some of it compares to the real high school experience.
Adding complicated by Avril Lavigne to the film was perfect. That song has like the perfect amount of angst to have in a movie that is about the teenage years. I loved the music overall but that song specifically was a perfect addition.
The bloopers at the end of the film were a great addition. Some of them were really funny and I understand that all the scenes can’t be in there but those would have been great additions. I really liked how they would show a actors name and then show bloopers that involve them.
I think my favorite part of the film was at the end when the self defense class actually paid off. Throughout the film we knew that the girls didn’t have any background in fighting and were just winging it but it worked. The girls of the club took down the opposing footballl team in the most violent and bloody way and I must say it was awesome. It was such an exciting scene to see them having each others backs and truly showing this team who is the boss. They probably killed some of the guys but hey it’s part of the journey. It really was a great way to end the film.
Bottoms is an unhinged film with a great story that will make you laugh but is also so cohesive and spends the right amount of time dealing with a situation and then realizing when it’s time to move on. The cast is great and I think that this film will go down as one of the coming age films that people will like to revisit.
