Favorite TV Shows of 2024
Hey everyone and welcome today we will be talking about some of my favorite shows of 2024. There were some great new TV shows as well as some returning shows that really stood out. I love that there are so many options when it comes to TV so you will find something that fits the vibes you are looking for. So without further ado let’s get right into it.
There are so many shows I watched and as much as I would love to tell you every single one I liked and why, I am going to spare you but I do want to mention some good ones that are not on my list. Here are my honorable mentions: True Detective: Night Country, Invincible Season 2, Monarch Legacy of Monsters, Abbott Elementary Season 3, Batman Caped Crusader, Only Murders in the Building Season 4, and The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3.
Shogun sees a group of 4 regents go against the 5th regent because they feel threatened by him because of his family’s prestige and think he threatens the balance of power. Throughout the season, we see how the four regents are playing checkers while Toranaga is playing chess, always one step ahead, especially with him having a Westerner on his side teaching him their battle ways. The show displays this complex political squabble while they are trying to avoid an all-out war and also the importance of not closing yourself off to new ideas because they could benefit you. Anna Sawai really stands out in this cast as a translator whose family has a bad reputation and must try to help this foreigner understand the Japanese culture but also translate and give advice to Torunaga. The show is a masterclass in a slow-burn drama, and with the show being mainly in Japanese, it feels more authentic than trying to have an English version of the show. I love how Shogun is an introduction to Japan’s history, and while you have all this political drama, they also add stuff like a giant earthquake, which is a small plot point but something to account for since Japan is on a fault. The story is fascinating, it’s shot beautifully, and the cast is just amazing.
Agatha All Along made me feel something I haven’t felt in a long time, excited for a new Marvel show. I loved the witches, the references to movies and TV shows, and how the show has very loose ties to the MCU, but it feels like you could just hop in and enjoy. Something that I don’t think enough shows think about is the release schedule, especially for shows that have a theme that would fit a season. Agatha All Along did pay attention, which made me excited because it is this spooky witch show, and they aired it leading up to Halloween and had the finale the day before Halloween, which was perfect timing, and they gave us the last two episodes at once, which I think is way better than giving us the first 2 or 3 at once. Agatha all along is the song she sang in Wandavision, and I was like, well, there’s no way they’ll top that, and they came in swinging with the Ballad of The Witches Road, which we got many different versions of, and I was singing along to all of them. Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke, Aubrey Plaza, Debra Jo Rupp, Aly Ahn, Patti Lupone, and Sasheer Zamata all did so good, and they were able to make me so invested in their characters’ story whether they were there for a long ride or a short one. If there’s anything that made me feel like there is some hope left for Marvel it is this show.
So before X-Men ’97 came out, I rewatched the original and I didn’t realize how cringe some of that show was, but I love superhero stuff, so I said I’m still going to watch this one, and I was in love from the get-go. This show picks up right after the ending of the last show with Professor X being presumed dead, Cyclops is leading the team until a shocking bit of info comes to light, which is that Professor X left the team to Magneto, and to no one’s shock there is still a fight to ensure mutants have rights. The show highlights Bastion and Mister Sinister as the villains and throws in so many surprises, like the professor being alive, Madelyne Pryor being with the team instead of Jean Grey, storm losing her powers, and the destruction of Genosha. The show gives us Omega mutants, heart-wrenching moments throughout the season, and really reminded me of the superhero shows I grew up on that were kid-friendly but also didn’t dumb down the information given or try to make the show comedic with a side of action. The show really stood out with the way they were able to tell this story and have you so invested in these characters. They gave the right characters room to breathe and let some of the characters who have spent so much time in the limelight a chance to take a back seat role, and the fight scenes showed these characters using their powers in interesting ways. It was interesting to see a lot of these heroes showcase the range of their powers and there was so much to love, from the fight scenes to smaller stuff like iconic costume changes.
Industry is a show that follows a group of post-grads who are in the finance industry in London at Pierpoint. I always tell people that it’s a mix of Euphoria and Succession, but don’t get me wrong, it stands on its own. The show is a stressful one, but one of the highlights is seeing how much the characters have grown from season one and how they are able to adapt to the ever-changing world. This show is so good, and with how stressful it is, the hour will fly past, and with each season, it’s just gotten better. Each season of the show has a billionaire whom they are working with, and this season it is Henry, played by Kit Harrington, who is this rich manchild whose company, Lumi, is going public, and everything that can go wrong does go wrong, and it brings Pierpoint down too. Harper, Robert, Yas, and Eric are who I see as the main characters of this show, and it’s always fascinating to see where they will end up and who they will hurt to get there. Rishi gets an episode this season that made me realize he’s been there for 3 seasons, but I knew nothing about him, and after the episode, I learned he was a dick outside of work. Industry makes you feel like you are working in the finance sector with these characters and leaves you just as stressed, and I love how it doesn’t dumb down the material, they throw financial terms out not to confuse the viewer but to help them feel more immersed in what’s going on. You feel so invested in these characters, and one scene had me shocked that I was tearing up at the realization that two characters I had been rooting for will not have a happily ever after. The end seemed final, but the show is coming back, so I’m interested to see how they deal with that.
Blood of Zeus is a show about Greek mythology, which is right up my alley, and after Zeus is killed in season 1, season 2 sees everyone vying for the throne. The story follows Heron, who is a son of Zeus and has the same powers as him, and he is navigating life without his father. His mother, who was his whole world, is dead as well, and his new family is a mixed bag when it comes to them liking him or not. The Eleusinian stone will decide who will be the next ruler, but you have to complete trials set by Gaia, and of course, most of the gods think they will be the best rulers. The story is fascinating to see this outsider be groomed to lead this group who mostly hate him because of who he is, but you can tell Heron is the right person because he is not chasing this position because he thinks he is the best but more so because he was encouraged by Gaia. The season lets some gods take a back seat but gives some gods who were in the shadow, like Hades, Hestia, and Persephone, more time to shine. It’s interesting to see these gods and their abilities while also learning about the Titans and other stuff that comes up in Greek history but it does a great job at not making the viewer feel overwhelemed. The gods always prove they are awful in this show, and it may bite them in the ass when their worst fear is released, so I’m interested to see what happens in the final season.
The Penguin shows you how you can do something about a villain without their superhero included. The show displays the rise of Ozwald Cobblepot, who yearns to be the leader of the criminal underground in Gotham. Collin Farrel plays Oz, and with the prosthetics and the accent, I almost forgot it was him. The show has a theme of this underdog rising to the top, and instead of asking for a better position in life, he takes it. Oz is going against the Maronis and the Falcones, and while his plans don’t always go as planned, he is great at pivoting. The cast is outstanding, and each episode had me hooked, they made the story feel like it’s a part of the Batman universe but also its own thing. I love how they made you feel sympathy for Oz at first, and by the end of the season, you end up hating him, and you also see how he gained power. The show is structured like a mob show, which benefits it because it focuses more on the characters, developing Oz and showing his different relationships instead of focusing on the Batman or just skipping his backstory altogether. After so many supervillain-centered shows and movies, I was very nervous about this one, but they did such a great job and had me looking forward to seeing how they expand Oz’s story and Sofias as well.
Interview with the Vampire is a show I think not enough people are watching, and they need to start right now. This season picks up right after the last, with Louis and Claudia exploring Europe, looking for other vampires after they killed their maker, and they end up in Paris in the past. In the present day, Louis and Armand are telling Daniel Malloy this story while Malloy is also getting information from this mysterious organization called the Talamasca, which will put a wedge in their relationship. This show has great acting, the story hops between 3 main time points this season very smoothly, the locations are so fascinating, and they do such a great job with costumes, which help to understand what time we are in. The one question I had since season 1 was why Louis was the only one in the present day doing this interview. At the end of season one, we find out what happened to Lestat, so that just left Claudia, and we see what happened to her, which is just heartbreaking. Another storyline that had been heavily hinted at was that Malloy had met Louis before, which was interesting to see what happened with that and how lucky Malloy is to be alive. This is by far my favorite adaptation of this book, and it keeps me so invested in the story. Some curveballs are delivered at the perfect time which had me in pure shock. The actors do a great job of showing how the events from the past affected the character they are playing and how, for a vampire, time doesn’t heal all wounds. This is a show about vampires, but for me, it differs because so many see them using their abilities to fight an enemy but Interview focuses more on the character relationships, and these people just happen to be vampires, so it takes into account their not being able to be in the sunlight, needing to feed on blood, and heightened abilities, but the story focuses on how complicated these relationships are and how you can be blinded by love.
Baby Reindeer is based on a true story and while it was hard to watch, it’s a very good show. The premise of the show is that this comedian, Danny Dun who is nice to a customer, Martha, and then she starts becoming attached to him and eventually stalking him. It’s a hard watch, but it’s worth it to see not only the story that Richard Gadd is telling but, I think it is a reminder that stalking, rape, and sexual assault also happen to men and we shouldn’t dismiss them when it happens. The show is brilliantly acted and will make you uncomfortable but I think that’s the goal, to feel maybe an ounce of what he was feeling while dealing with this. The show also explores his struggling comedy career, his being comfortable with his sexuality, and how to find your voice and speak up for yourself. The story that they wanted to tell was perfect for this miniseries format and will have you wanting to finish so you can see the outcome of how it will all turn out.
TV is a comfort for many including myself because you can just be at home enjoying it without having to leave home and there are just so many choices which can get overwhelming but also great for when you are bored. Thank you for watching my video, as always. I would love to hear some of your favorite shows from 2024 in the comments. Please don’t forget to subscribe. But besides that, everyone stay safe, have fun, and hopefully, 2025 brings you all you want goodbye!
