Deadpool and Wolverine
Hey everyone and welcome today we will be talking about the film Deadpool and Wolverine. Fun Fact, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige was there at Hugh Jackman’s original audition for Wolverine since he was a producer on X-Men. This film came out in 2024 and stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Emma Corrin and was directed by Shawn Levy. So without further ado let’s get right into it.
Deadpool and Wolverine sees Deadpool trying to save his timeline after the anchor being from his universe, Wolverine has died and TVA member Paradox wants to get rid of his timeline quickly. Deadpool travels to other universes to find a Wolverine so that his world doesn’t die and in the process makes some new friends and a new enemy unlike anything he’s seen before.
Deadpool and Wolverine is a comedy action film. It has similar vibes to Furiosa, Loki season 1 episode 5, or X-men.
Deadpool and Wolverine was a movie I was super excited for because all of the Deadpool movies have been great and I would say Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has become kind of a legend in the comic book movie world and I just knew they’d have some great banter. The main thing I was worried about was whether the move to Disney would make this film lose its charm and I think it’s safe to say it didn’t. They managed to introduce Deadpool into the MCU and keep the character the way that we have come to love.
Ryan Reynolds leads this movie as Deadpool aka Wade Wilson aka the Merc with a mouth but he also is one of the writers and producers of this film. After being rejected from nearly all teams he is living a low-key life at the beginning of the film which was hard for him until the TVA intervenes. He is on a mission to save his timeline from Paradox and the TVA who sees that his timeline is dying and is trying to speed up the process so Wade attempts to save it by recruiting a Wolverine.
I’m amazed at the fact that Ryan was able to take a character that was massacred in a movie and basically have a redo and do it right and change the perception of that character completely. I just feel like there are often talks about actors who play a role so well that you wouldn’t want anyone else to play it and I think Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is one on my list, he’s so funny on and off the camera and the way he is able to compare Deadpools life or events happening in front of his eyes to something big that happened in pop culture is hilarious to me as a pop culture connoisseur. I loved how he was wearing a Toupe in the beginning and had staples in his head to hold the toupe and decided to keep the staples in his head throughout the rest of the movie.
In this film, his swords are Adamantium which makes sense to match Wolverine’s skeleton and makes for a deadlier merc. Speaking of Adamantium the opening scene was hilarious to see him take out TVA members with the dead Logans Adamantium skeleton while doing a choreographed dance to Bye Bye Bye by NSYNC which I feel like many people don’t realize the song was also in X2 and I learned that dancer Nick Pauley was the one who did the dance moves for that so bravo. Deadpool never stops talking and it’s always funny to see how everyone is always annoyed by that but he still has a core group of family who loves him for who he is and who he is fighting for. Ryan also plays Nicepool who is an alternative to Deadpool who doesn’t have a disfigured body, talks as much, and is generally nicer who Deadpool hatesssss and it was funny to see them interact on screen and Deadpool eventually being the reason Nicepool dies. I just really enjoyed Ryan in this role and I’m glad they’re able to keep the story going.
Deadpool falls in love with Dogpool in this movie who he can’t have because it’s Nicepool’s dog. That dog was so ugly but I loved him and I’m glad nothing happened to him.
Wolverine is played by Hugh Jackman who returns to the role that also won him the Guinness world record for longest career as a live-action Marvel character with this being his 10th outing over 24 years. Wolverine is violent and I feel like in the first film they were dialing it back but as time has progressed they have been able to show his animalistic nature, his Berserker rage as some might say which is showcased more in this film like when he and Deadpool fought in the void and he was on all 4s running towards him.
I loved Logan and I was worried they would try and rewrite that film which I’m glad that they didn’t and showed that Wolverine from Logan is like dead dead and this is a completely different Wolverine who is sad because he let his team down. It was interesting to see that he not only let his team down by not being there when they all got killed but also due to him retaliating which gave the X-Men a bad name. I love how they showed him as the character that works with Deadpool but also hates him and his nonstop talking and they let him curse. We also finally get to see him in a comic book-accurate outfit that isn’t black leather and that made me so happy because the comic book outfits of heroes are cool and colorful. He comes face to face with his arch nemesis Sabertooth and I thought it was funny to see this battle that always happens between them, ended so quickly with him slicing his head off. He agrees to help with the promise that Deadpool can change the past in his universe but later in the film he decides to be more selfless. B-15 tells him that she cant fix that past but also reminds him that if she changes the past he would never have become the person that he is today. I do love how they also managed to squeeze in a comic book-accurate Wolverine that’s short since it’s something that has been discussed so much online when talking about if someone else was going to step into the role.
There are a lot of Cameos from various superhero movies in the past, more specifically the nondisney movies as well as some from the MCU. I felt like the void was the perfect place to show these characters especially since that is where it seems like they’ve been since no one mentions them anymore but I still think of them. Jennifer Gardner returned as Elektra which was spoiled for me but I still loved to see her return because even tho the Elektra movie is not the best, I used to enjoy watching that movie. Wesley Snipes returns as Blade and as a superhero lover and lover of vampires, that movie was right up my alley so I was so happy to see him return and joke about him being the only Blade considering the hell the new Blade movies are going through. Channing Tatum plays Gambit and if you are wondering if he played him before the answer is no because Taylor Kitch played him but Channing intended to play him in his own franchise which never really got off the ground so him playing him was something that was years in the making. We see Pyro who I must admit I used to quote a lot from X2 when he says You know all those dangerous mutants you hear about on the news I’m the worst one. In this film, he’s a double agent for paradox which was interesting to see and kind of the reason that Cassandra knows about the machine to kill universes and she snaps his neck like it’s nothing.
X-23 comes back played by Dafne Keen in this film who we’ve only seen in Logan which is one of the best comic book movies ever and she is more grown now and going by Laura. I love how she is used as the one to make Wolverine realize that he has done bad stuff in his past but he has an opportunity to be selfless in the present and help someone else out. Chris Evans returns in the role that first introduced me to him which is the Human Torch and I loved seeing his return in this movie alongside Ryan Reynolds who is one of the few Marvel stars who has played another Marvel character and it was hilarious how Deadpool thought he was playing Captain America. I feel like this portrayal of Human Torch lets him strip himself of the perfect Captain America portrayal and just be the crazy Johnny Storm who unfortunately got his skin ripped off by Cassandra. Henry Cavil makes a cameo as an alternate Wolverine which is something I’ve seen discussed on the internet, him either playing Wolverine or just being in the MCU so it’s nice to finally see him. We see an array of X-men film villains, the 20th century Fox logo, Lady Deadpool played by Blake Lively, Cowboy Deadpool played by Matthew McConaughey, and a few others from the MCU. I loved to see these cameos from past characters to kind of pay homage to them considering a lot of these actors paved the way for what is now effectively the MCU. In the credits, they also show behind-the-scenes from some of these movies which further showed how much they appreciated the ones that came before.
Paradox is a member of the TVA played by Matthew Mcfayden who wants to use a device he created called a time ripper to get rid of Wade’s timeline quicker which obviously doesn’t go over well for Wade. He is an overachiever and is trying to prove that his way is right without the approval of his superiors and also wants Cassandra killed even though he doesn’t understand the agreement she has with someone higher up in the TVA. His whole plan backfires when Cassandra attempts to use the time ripper to wipe out all the timelines except the void which wouldn’t have been a problem if he just did his job as he was told. Matthew did a good job at making you hate this character and also made me realize how messy the TVA still is. He introduces us to the term “anchor beings” that are needed on the timeline and I do wonder if that will come into play again later.
Cassandra Nova is played by Emma Corrin and she is Professor X’s twin if you couldnt tell by her bald head. She has Telekinetic and Telepathic powers and this might be the best live-action display I’ve seen of someone with that powerset being ruthless and powerful. She is a psycho and she is very contempt being in the void until she finds out Paradox is trying to get rid of her. She is one of those villains with a lot of minions, not because they think she can do things for them, but mostly its because they are scared. In the end, she tries to destroy the timelines with the time ripper in an attempt to only keep the void but is ultimately indirectly stopped by Wolverine and Deadpool. When I saw her in the trailer I was like wow she’s so powerful how are two supes like Deadpool and Wolverine going to stop her and I felt they handled that smartly by doing it indirectly because it was too far of a reach to throw on all this plot armor and have them be able to face her head on and survive. I enjoyed how they also even put a helmet on her to dampen her powers which is something that has been discussed for years in X-Men media to block out telepath powers and recently was used on X-Men 97. While I did love the character’s portrayal I do wish we got more backstory because she was an interesting villain and I would love more time to explore her.
I have to mention Peter because Peter may not have any superpowers but he is great and loved by all Deadpools across different universes and B-15 as well. Cheers to Peter the real MVP.
With the ability to heal and an R rating I just knew the fights were going to be great and I was correct. Deadpool has always been able to bridge the gap with fights that are intense but also will have you laughing and they once again brought it to this film. Like who else could use the skeleton of a dead wolverine to fight many TVA henchmen while doing full choreography to Bye Bye Bye. We even got to see some cool use of powers and other fighting styles from Elektra, Blade, Gambit, and X-23. The fights were violent and fun and were greatly done.
The soundtrack was full of iconic bangers and I saw the tracklist before the release and said how this fit in the movie and they did a good job. Like Bye Bye Bye, Glamorous, I’m With You, and Like a Prayer to name a few. The songs they chose really elevated the film.
My Favorite part of this film was the writing from the jokes to answering questions I had going into this film I thought they did a good job. Going into this movie I was like how would they possibly defeat someone as overpowered as Cassandra, How can you bring Wolverine back after that great send off, Will this movie still break the 4th wall and be as vulgar with Disney taking over, Will it be funny, etc. I think they did a good job answering my questions and still retaining the heart of Deadpool and making jokes about everything including the MCU and superhero movies themselves. Even with all the cameos, the film didn’t feel overstuffed to me at least and they let some characters get a little more time to shine. I love to see what 4th wall joke Deadpool is going to make and there were so many that kept me laughing throughout the movie from the Furiosa joke to the joke about Happy being an Avenger and I just enjoyed them. I’m glad they could still make a fantastic Deadpool movie and I feel like they did something that’s hard to do which is make 3 great movies.
Deadpool and Wolverine is a fun nostalgia-filled ride. You’ll be on the edge of your seat with the action and laughing at all the jokes. I don’t know what the future is for Deadpool but all I know is that I enjoyed this movie.
