Hey everyone and welcome. Today we will be talking about Ariana Grandes 6th album Positions. Fun Fact, the song position debuted at the number one spot on the billboard 100 making Ariana the only person to have 5 songs debut on top of the chart. This is her follow up to the uber popular thank u, next. The album was released in 2020 and debuted at number one. So without further ado lets get right into it.

Shut Up

We start the album off with the properly titled Shut up. I love this simply because its what I think when people talk to me sometimes, most times. Just shut up. But with these lyrics I really get the feeling she’s addressing everyone who hates on her and spends there time talking negatively about her life and telling them “maybe you should shut up. I think its a very chill way to start the album and sets the tone for what the album will sound like.vI think this song is catchy and we see Ari singing in a lower tone that she doesn’t usually sing in. Also we get a feel that this will be a r&b album but I love the orchestra at the end of this song thats reminiscent of something in an older movie

34 + 35

Moving onto 34 +35 which if you add it up is 69 for those of you who struggle at math. When I first heard this song I was like oh ok so we talking about S E X.The lyrics of this song are so fun just talking about wanting some fun time with whoever your partner is at the time. Ariana sings “can you stay up all night? Fuck me till the daylight” so I think she makes it very clear on what she’s singing here. When I saw the title I didn’t know she was gonna be talking about sex. I am shocked when I  listen to this song because its so straightforward but its also catchy so I find myself bobbing my head along. I love these fun songs that you can jam out to and you don’t even know what you really singing about and you realize you singing about sex and then you can continue bopping along .

Motive

Next we are grooving into Motive feat Doja cat.  She ask on this song “what’s your motive”. I feel like she’s trying to figure out Before she gets with this person or move forward with there relationship she wants to know what they tryna do. The beat on this song has you jamming and singing along and I love it. Doja cat can hop on any beat and just kills it. This song has a very groovy beat and I think Doja was a perfect additions to this song.

Just like magic

Just like magic is coming up next. When I listened to the album this song stood out for me and is definitely one of my favorites. I love the lyrics on this song and to me they kinda tell a journey of everything going the way you want it to. Everything she sings about on this song is viewed in a positive light. I also get the feel that she’s also talking about a relationship and everything just working out perfectly fine. No problems. I love how this  song is about things going right and being perfect just like magic. I love on this song when she says “Keep my conscience clean thats why im so magnetic”. I just love her singing about just fucking staying in her lane not causing drama and just doing her. This is just a fun song and its super positive and I really like the positive vibes. When I listen to this I just feel like Ariana is in such a good place.  I love this song, I love how this song is just a fun and happy song.The beat is great and her vocals are fire.  When I listen to this song It just seems like she’s was in  such a good place while making this album.

Off the Table

Next up we have Love me harder part 2 also known as off the table. The Weeknd and Ari together is just perfect. I loved love me harder and I love this collaboration as well. Their voices go so well together. Ariana starts off this song singing “will I ever love the same way again?” Which leads me to believe this song is addressing some reservations she’s had about jumping into a relationship and wondering if shell be able to offer up love the way she has in the past. It also sounds like she is singing about being hurt from a relationship in the past.  I see hints of her doubting herself and just saying is “love off the table”? From the lyrics in this song I feel like this has to do with her Mac miller who I know still holds a special place in Arianas heart.  The weekends part seems like he’s asking for a second chance in a relationship after he’s messed up. He’s willing to do anything to make sure he can get back with her. I think that Ari and the weekend making good songs when they collaborate. I love this collaboration and I feel like there voices mesh so well together and this song has a very simple beat and I feel like I’m listening to a R&b song from the 90s.

Six thirty

Coming in next is six thirty. From this song I get that Ariana is asking if her partner is ready to put up with her and just asking if he’s  down. She sing “ down like six thirty” and she mentioned in an interview that name came from when you look at a clock six thirty points down . I love how this song is asking are you ready to put up with my shit and ready to be with me forever and ever. It’s so cute to me because it seems like she’s in love and just wants to make sure that this person is feeling the same way. I think her voice sounds very angelic on this song when she sings the chorus, she does this small I guess vocal run when she says are you down that is just great. I love the strings that you hear in the beat as well.

Safety net

Moving on into Safety Net featuring Ty dollar sign. In this song we see ari singing about jumping into a relationship with no safety net. From the lyrics I gather that she is taking a risk this time around and doing things she usually doesn’t do. It seems like she is giving this relationship a try even though she is aware of all the hurdles. She questions if she should fight or fly. Fight meaning stay or fly meaning leave when it comes to her feelings on this relationship that she’s singing about. Ty dolla sign comes in on this track rapping about making this relationship work. He’s saying that they’ve come too far and now they’re stuck together. I don’t know how I feel about this song if I’m being honest. I cant tell if I like it or not, I’m  somewhere in the middle for this one.

My hair

Moving on to my hair. On this song we see Ari giving permission to someone to touch her hair  as she gets close to a lover. Everyone knows Ariana for her signature ponytail and in this song it seems as if she is saying this is the next step in the relationship and also that she is now her true self with her hair down because its a look people don’t usually see. I like how this song seems to address her iconic hair but also using her hair as a means to describe that she’s opening up to someone and just being herself. Once again this song reminds me of a 90s/early 2000s r&b song and I love those vibes on this album. Also there’s  a part she sings this song in her signature high note but its like for a good minute and I was fucking impressed when I heard that. Her voice is fucking amazing.

Nasty

Ohhhh time to get nasty.Before we get any lyrics on this song. We hear her ad libbing with her iconic high note. She sings on this song “no more playin safe, let’s take it all the way” and I definitely think this song is about taking it to the next stage in a relationship by sealing the deal, doing the deed. This Is a fun song in which Ariana is just waiting to get nasty aND at this point she’s not playing it safe and is ready to jump on in. This song is pretty obvious in what it means and I like the straightforward songs where you know exactly what she’s talking about. This song has a similar theme as 34+35 as you can tell when you listen to the lyrics. She is very straightforward on this song and I think this is a departure Fromm past music where she wasn’t as straightforward. This is a very mellow song. I like the chill vibes on this song

West side

Moving on to west side. I think she is talking about taking it slow. This song sounds like she’s talking about falling in love and listening to your emotions. I personally didn’t really connect with this song. I did however really like the pre-chorus.

Love language

Next out the gate is love language. On love language we hear Ari trying to understand her partner more. Ariana  sings “ teach me how to love you” and I gather thats she’s trying to accurately figure out how to make sure shell mesh well with this person. She also talks about how her partner knows exactly what she wants. It seems like its that feeling of finding someone and they fit perfectly with you. Its great when you just mesh. This song has a fun beat and towards the end does a complete switch up which I think is cool to hear.

Positions

Up next we have the first single from the album Positions. This song debuted at number one on the charts and gave fans a taste on what was to come. When I first heard this song was not what I expected but it grew on me so fast and now I find myself singing along every time. When I hear this song I feel like Ari is saying she’s the whole package when she says “cooking in the kitchen and I’m in the bedroom”. I also get the feeling on this song that she wants to move to the next step in their relationship by meeting his mom. But I also see how she’s changing the way she approaches relationships and doing things that she usually doesn’t do. The song is super fun and catchy and her word choice is makes you want to sing along and vibe out . I just love how enjoyable this song is from the lyrics to beat and the visuals for it are presidential

Obvious

Up next is obvious. From what Ariana is saying I gather that she is talking about being in love with someone and just really hoping it works out. Its kind of like love at first sight and she’s making it obvious that she is into him. I also feel like this song this song is Ariana starting to believe in love again which its just nice to hear this song and know thats she’s happy and in love again. I think this song is great but the chorus stands out for me. I love how the lyrics are so positive and just about her being in love. Her voice is so good on this track.

POV

Last but certainly not least POV. This song is just fucking beautiful. In this song Ariana is singing about how much her partner loves her flaws and all. She sings that shed love to see herself from his point of view and I take that she wants to understand why he loves her even with all of her flaws. I love her her vocal range on this song. I think this song is fucking beautiful. When I went through the album this song I thought was the perfect way to end this album. Its a great song and I think it brings up a topic which I noticed on this album which is being in love. Its a slower song and it works on this album and is such a nice positive song to end the album with. Its definitely one of my faves.

END

I feel like she sings in her deeper register more than high notes on this album. I think it really shows that yes she can hit very high notes but if she wants to sing in a different, more deeper key she can also do that. This album has heavy R&B influences and I love to see that. It reminds me of some of the songs from the 90’s and early 200s that I Grew up listening too. This album is super mellow and easy to listen to which is perfect for the mood right now. This album is coming out in a pandemic so we at home, or at least y’all should be at home, chillin and just vibing out to good music either alone or with your significant other.  The overall theme I got from this album was Love and a little sex but mostly love and I think the last two albums that Ari has made really focused on her dealing with a lot of pain and it was nice on this album to see her loving again and it really seems like she’s in a happier place. I think music can come from a dark place but also a place of light and I think its great to see her pulling from a place of light and in my opinion she seems genuine happier and I love that for her. I also think its dope how Ariana was not only making this album but in the process she’s been sharing information about voting and understanding elections. Its a crazy time for people and I think making information easier to process for her fans has been extremely helpful. I think its one thing to put out music that people enjoy and consume but I think its even better when artist use their platform to spread awareness to things that are important to them. I just say keep up the good work Ariana, you’re doing great. I overall loved this album. I think Ari present a great piece of art and she sticks with an overall r&b feel of this album. I love how after all she’s been through she can still find love and give love and still make amazing music. I think you should definitely check out this album when you’re chillin at home and looking for something to vibe to. Its definitely something you can listen too while relaxing with your partner and you guys can just vibe out to it or go do other things while listening to it.
