Something To Give Each Other
Hey everyone and welcome, today we will be talking about the album Something to Give Each Other by Troye Sivan. This is Troye’s 3rd studio album alongside Blue Neighborhood and Bloom and this album seems very reflective and has Troye revisiting some moments in his life recently. The album reminded me of like an anthology series because every song seems to be telling a different story but even with that the album as a whole works. So without further ado let’s get right into these songs.
Rush
Rush is the lead single from the album and really showed me that this album had potential to be great when I first heard it. This song is like a club track and makes me want to dance and if you’ve seen the music video then you would know that Troye also made it have those club vibes and let you know Troye wasn’t coming to play. The song lyrics hint that it’s about Troye hooking up with a guy at the club with just no repercussions, just fun. The title of this song seems to reference the poppers and if you don’t know what that is then you shall have to google that yourself but also the feeling of Rush like a surge of emotions, a double entendre one might say. This song is a great way to start the album and is in my top 3 songs of this album.
Whats The Time Where You Are?
Coming in next and keeping up these vibes that make you want to dance is Whats The Time Where You Are? From the first beat drop this song had me vibing and wanting to dance and I love how there is somebody speaking in the beginning but the background music drowns out the voices a little but you can still hear them which for me feels like a challenge because I will now be doing everything to figure out what they are saying. When listening to the lyrics I gather that Troye can’t focus on where he is because he’s thinking about the last interaction he had with this person who really opened his eyes and changed his perspective on some things. In the chorus he’s asking these questions and it really seems like these are questions he could find answers to himself but he wants to keep the conversation going so he keeps asking them. This song slowly grew on me and eventually became a top 3 contender for my favorite song on this album and really had me grooving.
One of Your Girls
Cruising in next is the third single off the album One of Your Girls which shifts the vibes and is much slower. Troye talked about this song being about hooking up with straight men which made him feel desperate and didn’t make him feel good. From the title you get a hint at that and from the lyrics I gathered that he also kept it a secret obviously because he wasn’t trying to out someone and told the person not to think about it. In the song he says give me a call if you get desperate but I’m like Troye are you sure you aren’t the desperate one? The chorus for this song sounds like a sad robotic voice which works for the vibes of this song. The song feels reflective on these past choices he regrets but he realizes that its no ones fault but his own and doesn’t blame the other person for the situation. The song has this synth pop sound that helps this song feel like a song you would sing along to but also might make you start questioning your past decisions.
In My Room featuring Guitarricadelafuente
In My Room comes in next featuring Spanish singer Guitarricadelafuente which mixes Spanish and English and gives us this song which is slower and to me one that I would listen to if I was cruising around town or relaxing at home. The songs lyrics seem to be referencing a toxic relationship or a toxic crush. It seems like Troye is trying to figure out why he can’t stop thinking about this person like is it because he admires them, is the sex, does he adore them, or is he infatuated with them? The world will never know but at least we got a good song out of it.
Still Got It
Still Got It pushes its way in next which is this song that sounds sad but also feels like recorded in a big room and sounds unearthly if that makes sense. This song starts off with this organ and I was like wait am I in church or a chapel but nope I’m just listening to Troye Sivan. While examining the words coming out of Troyes mouth i figured this song is about this relationship or past fling and they have gone their separate ways and Troye sees them again and there is this awkwardness where they act if they don’t know each other, like they weren’t even a thing after they shared so much. I questioned If they hooked up again after seeing each other because he’s talking about touching on a party bus and both are a little tipsy. It’s a sweet but sad song of Troye remembering why he fell for this person and debating if he wants them back.
Can’t Go Back, Baby
Can’t Go Back, Baby struts itself in next and its just a good ole breakup song and the background music seems to have this surface noise which reminds me of like if you ever heard someone play something on a gramophone but its very subtle. There’s a piano playing with this beat while Troye sings about a breakup during a time where he thought things were going good in the relationship and he was having a high in his career. This song is like a realization that you don’t always know a person like you thought you did and even though he did love them, what they did was unforgivable and for his own happiness he had to move on. While this song seems like a break up song its also a song where Troye is reminding us to love ourselves and know what were worth and in this scenario he is worth more than how this person treated him.
Got Me Started
Got Me Started which was the second single released is next and like this song is just so freaking lovely to me and breaks up the slower songs. This song has this sultry sound and samples the Bag Riders song Shooting Stars which just elevates this song. The lyrics tell a story that seems to start at the club and and leads to someone’s house where more happens and they are doing what they are doing until the sun rises and its just a great time for the people involved. The person that Troye is describing seems like they are the most secure person in their sexuality and personality and really owns who they are and Troye interacts with him and finds that attractive and they hit it off. The chorus has these sped up vocals that I really love. The music video further solidified my love for this song and I love me a good one two step and Troye showed off dance moves and the vibes of the music video just fit perfectly with the song. This song is in the top 3 off this album for me and I love to hear it when it comes on.
Silly
Silly is what decides to play next which is a chill song where for part of the song Troyes voice is distorted but then becomes normal again. I surmise that Troye is talking about an ex and reaching out to them because he feels like they are the only one who truly knows him. He goes to the club to get over how he feels but he can’t find the person who is like his ex and is just working with what he’s got to get out of whatever funk he is in.
Honey
Honey comes stomping in next and Troye brings this ethereal background music that sounds like voices harmonizing. The lyrics seem to discuss Troye with this person just exploring each others bodies or more plainly, Sex. It seems like he is trying to figure out how to express these feelings that he’s feeling and he wants that honey which I assume is that sweet, good stuff.
How to Stay With You
The grand finale is How to Stay With You which comes in beat drum that will have you moving your shoulders. I love the line where he says I feel like my brother might like you just not in the same way I do. This song seems to be about seeing this person as someone to settle down with later, in video game terms this man would be the final boss, the one to stop him from dating anyone else. He’s feeling this way because the interactions he had with this person are just too good and he doesn’t want them to end. It’s a chill song a great way to end this album.
Troye Sivan offers a short but sweet album with Something to Give Each Other. The album feels like I’m listening to a friend tell different stories about things they’ve been going through since we last talked and I was super immersed in the lyrics. The songs really had me wanting more and I think this was a great follow up to Bloom. I feel like with each album Troye grows more into who he wants to be and lets that show through his music.
